5/10/2023 0 Comments Lost souls briteI bought The Sandman: Volume 1 by Neil Gaiman even though I wasn’t that into comics at the time because I couldn’t escape mentions of the book and had to know what it was all about. Need I say more? Fair warning, I’m suspect that this one, like Exquisite Corpse, is a disturbing piece of work. I did read the summary for Lost Souls and I can’t believe I hadn’t heard more about it. I borrowed my Brite copy from the same friend who loaned me The Story of O. Brite was Exquisite Corpse, but I’m leaving it up to people who are more well read on his work. This fictional character has escaped The Call of Cthulhu to become an icon, which is truly terrifying because I hear he’s not the forgiving sort and I don’t know what he’d think of all that merch. There was a time when one couldn’t escape cute, stuffed Cthulhus propped on black shelves and nestled among pillows on velvet-lined beds. The goth’s love of Cthulhu is strong and unusually plush. If goth culture had a mascot or a patron saint for protection against high school, Cthulhu wouldn’t encounter much adversity in claiming the title, and not just because of the primal dread.

5/10/2023 0 Comments Moon Dance by S.P. SomtowA trio of maiden aunts, ``the Three Fates,'' raise Justin on a family estate just outside of Bangkok loaded with intrigue: Two are involved in a fling with a priapic English doctor, and none of the relatives can wait to get their paws on the will of the clan's matriarch, who vows to dance the limbo rock, a reference to an American pop song of the time, before she'll give up the ghost. Justin's parents, nearly mythic for their long-term absence, perform top-secret work for the US government as it grows increasingly entangled in Vietnam. It is 1963, and Justin's best friend Virgil, a black boy from Georgia, introduces him to the richness of black American culture and the prejudice that dogs his family even in Asia. Formidable forces converge on 12-year-old Justin's awakening to adolescence. A Thai coming-of-age tale mildly spiced with magic realism. 5/10/2023 0 Comments No Mercy by Lucian Bane(Any such would have to include large sections on Homeric archeology and philology. In particular, we have made no attempt to offer a representative selection of Homeric scholarship. It is a collection of lively encounters between Homer and some of the more perceptive and articulate of his modern readers. It seeks to conjoin the reader to the great company of those who, like himself, have found in Homer one of the prime mirrors and windows of the soul. It is a book based entirely on the principle of delight. What we offer here is not intended as a manual of critical governance. I would like to understand how you truly feel, about me, about the life you live, without having to guess at your sincerity. “Someday, I would like to know what is in your heart, Marcus. The truth would be best, though Ellen knew she couldn’t expect to receive it in return. Was he in earnest? What could she possibly say to him? She considered the question, glancing over her shoulder at the pained look in his eyes. I don’t want to see you like this, hurting.” 5/10/2023 0 Comments The Fell by Robert JenkinsRobert Jenkins was born and raised in Walthamstow, East London. When the boy’s fear and hatred of authority come to a head, everything is thrown into disarray and his action lead him to run from the Fell. What he never does, however, is question his own version of reality. He meets ghosts, hears voices and battles his fears. The boy sees the world and his place in it through a unique lens. The boys in the home become his family and they band together against their enemies, both real and imagined, and they become family. The arrest of his sister Lilly later that summer brings the halcyon days to an abrupt end, and his family is torn apart, with Lilly sent to jail and the boy set to a boarding house for dysfunctional boys, far away from his home – The Fell. He idolises his father – never more so than when he saves the life of a suicidal man – and he comes to believe that heroism is all. In an unspecified time and location, an unnamed boy is living what he feels to be an idyllic life in the faded and peeling Lido where his father is a lifeguard. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Shadow fall alphabet squadronWith assistance from General Hera Syndulla, Alphabet leader and Imperial defector Yrica Quell and her mentor Caern Adan create a scheme to lure Shadow Wing out of the darkness on their own terms, but when things don’t go to plan, the squadron finds themselves thrown to the four winds. And knowing his mother’s last wish, he decides to take Ari with him. Janna has always been a responsible guardian, but when Gage turns 19, he decides he can no longer live with bossy Jana. When their mother died from cancer four years ago, she had two wishes - the siblings would stay together and Ari would attend Carter, a middle school for gifted students.įollowing their mother’s death, Ari and Gage went to live with their mom’s friend, Janna. “Paper Things” is the story of Ari and her older brother, Gage. Last week, however, I had one of those experiences where I didn’t want to put a book down, and I read all 384 pages of Jennifer Richard Jacobson’s “Paper Things” in less than a day. Now 15 months old, my daughter loves books - including whatever I’m reading - which means strategically keeping them out of reach whenever she’s around. Then I had a baby, and that made finding time to read a little more complicated. In the past, it wasn’t unusual for me to read entire books in one day. “PAPER THINGS,” by Jennifer Richard Jacobson, Candlewick Press, Feb. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Dead rules by randy russellSo a really terrible person will, if not actively being bad at the exact moment he or she dies, will become a Riser and (it's implied, though never outright stated) will eventually go to heaven. What's the difference? A Slider was actively doing something bad at the moment of their death. In this afterlife high school, there are Risers (good) and Sliders (bad). The world building was confused and incomplete. I feel like I should have been able to like this book.īut. Then they'll be together forever! I really wanted to like this book. As if I needed anything else to hook me, I loved the idea of the main character being so desperate to be reunited with her still-living boyfriend that she'd plot his death. The premise, that recently dead teens go to schools to learn how to be dead, looking exactly as they did at the moment of their death. This is so disappointing, because I wanted to love this book. |
